Reason to Hope
Listen to this, it might contradict one of your worldviews and is therefore important: http://www.npr.org/2013/04/12/175619007/is-the-world-a-less-violent-place
I’ve read a lot of reflections about violence lately, both narrow to broad:
The Boston Marathon bombing is yet another tragedy that shows how awful the world is; the events in Boston shouldn’t allow us, for example, to diminish the...

You weren't made for democracy, Mike
Mike: I feel like no one should be able to get married. They lost that privilege for being dicks.
seriously though can we vote on straight sex marriage next?
Me: mike. how would we subjugate women without a ceremony signifying the transfer of their ownership from their fathers to us?
jeeeeesus, read a book.
Mike: listen, i am all about owning people. just don’t be a...

Here's a Tip: To Prevent Unnecessary Waste, Don't...
In the dark hall on the way back from brushing my teeth I see feet blocking the light from under my door and I stop short.
“Oh, there you are, what are you up to?”
“Nothing- what time is it.”
“Uh, 12:30.”
“…What are you up to?”
“There’s two parties to go to, man!”
I try not to say no to fun things. Maybe it was the tooth...

Shoe Rock
Message from a guy who found what is absolutely a fossil foot in a moccasin- very important. Found it 40 years ago, call back ASAP. I’ll definitely be interested in it.
Looking forward to that conversation…

The children going hungry in America
10 year old girl in Iowa: “I really want to be in school. If you don’t get a good education then you don’t get much money, you don’t get a good job, you end up sleeping at your mum’s. You end up being behind a lot of rent and you get kicked out. You end up being homeless and then with no food.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21636723

Taco Pie
One of my old (and favoritest!) housemates just got back into town after a 3 month adventure through 26 states. We made plans to hang out in the kitchen, as you do, on Tuesday.
On Monday night, as I’m drifting off to sleep, a concept pops into my brain: taco pie. So on Tuesday:
Bake (empty) pie crust until yummy. Add a layer of refried beans, (fake, in our case) seasoned taco meat, hot...

Duck Sauce
I had this song stuck in my head, except I couldn’t remember what is essentially the only lyric. And title. It was like that time on The Office when Andy couldn’t remember the Kit-Kat jingle.
“oo ooo oo ooo oo ooooo ooo save the bison”
“oo ooo oo ooo oo ooooo ooo buy a trashcan”
“oo ooo oo ooo oo ooooo ooo Michael Jackson”

So Long
One of my best friends just left the country after his visa expired. On Thursday, we sent him off in a fashion befitting.
On the most recent day of our lord, I had had a couple of beers during ping pong and a couple after-dinner glasses of wine before going to the bar. I arrived with the friend’s girlfriend. We decided to have shots so as to preserve the appearance that we had waited to...

Full Day!
This Saturday I wandered out in the foot or so of snow to retrieve all I could of the previous weekend’s clothing diaspora: A friend and I geared up for a Thrift Shop/Derelicte themed party, so I left my regular clothes at her house. Then my coat got stolen (thank goodness for the faux-fur fabulousness I was wearing for a costume) from that party. Then I borrowed another friend’s...

Blame It On Barney
That purple bastard! As an aside, most of these college kids haveart skills that make even no-talent me weep. Just abysmal (see examples in the Cornell version of the story).

Dangerous Knowledge
me: i started going to trivia with a couple of friends
turns out the whole rest of the team is beautiful women
she: turns out
me: oh, and get this: the first question when i sit down: “Also known as a death tyrant and eyes of the deep, this fantastic monster is a floating orb covered in eye stalks. A popular adversary in the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons, what is its...

The Cold and the Mud
First the semi won’t start so we have to wait for Dean to get starting fluid. Then the lift into the trailer disagrees with the cold and needs to do a few reps every time we want to lift a 400lb pallet full of exhibit. The pallet jack joins in and decides to stop jacking for about 15 minutes, and just as arbitrarily, starting working again. Those six hours of a cold morning were not quite so...
Things I Did
Friday: After work drink with coworkers, then (local, organic so I feel less bad about eating it) Baconfest, then beers at friends’ house, more beer at different friends’ house, and finally a rock and roll show. And pickle backs.
Saturday: Nothing.
Sunday: Mineral club open house with scores of visitors, dozens of cardboard crystal shapes constructed with kiddies, some funds raised...

Seismograph
It seems one of the gears in our short period seismograph has worn to the point that it counts the minutes slightly early on the seismograms—see how the tick marks come around a little earlier each time?:
Solution: paint the gear with fingernail polish. That extra layer increases its diameter just enough. It’s science.

I hate when people use iteration in a definition. When you try to define things the way 4-year-olds do, Pluto ends up not being a planet, ok?
